Cash Mary
i had been waiting for months to take ben to the festival and parade where the statues of saints get covered with money and hoisted around on the shoulders of south philadelphians!!
ben was a little nervous. i have had a hard time explaining the basic tenets of christianity to him, much less a festival where people pin money to the sanctified. could i answer the question, why? no, i couldn't. but as far as he's been able to illustrate to me, judaism is a bunch of holidays designed to give one a terrible migrane or crippling constipation. so. we went to adler street, near the convent, where it was ground zero for the festivities.
here are some popular saints collecting their money. if you look closely, you will see that someone has given st. francis of assisi a two-dollar bill.
of course nobody had more money than the queen of the may herself. you see her here, far right, appearing to rise from a strawberry shortcake, and guarded possessively by a number of south philly matrons who have undoubtedly modelled their lives after her.
